IRAQ POLICY WORKING GROUP

January 2003

Dear New Member of Congress:

The Iraq Policy Working Group welcomes you as a new member of the 108th Congress and offers this Iraq Briefing Book as a resource for you and your staff. (The materials contained in this binder are also available electronically at www.iraqbriefs.org. We will continue to update this site with new material as events unfold and hope you will find it a valuable resource.)

The Iraq Policy Working Group is a diverse group of organizations policy think tanks, faith-based, women's, veterans, and peace organizations, as well as humanitarian and arms control groups who are working with Congress to promote effective policies on Iraq. We include organizations that have been active on these issues since before the Gulf War, as well as individuals with particular expertise on Iraq and first-hand experience in the region.

The Iraq Briefing Book provides information on a wide range of issues relevant to the current debate on a possible war against Iraq. These include: Analysis of U.S. and U.N. Resolutions; Alternatives to War with Iraq; The Cost of War; Humanitarian and Human Rights Concerns; The Role Of Oil; Statements from Security Experts, Military Officials and Veterans; Statements from Religious Leaders; and General Background on Iraq, as well as a list of resource organizations, websites, and articles. A summary sheet of talking points and a list of experts introduces each section in the binder. In the back cover we have also provided materials illustrating public opposition to a war on Iraq, including information about grassroots activities in your state or district.

We encourage you to contact us with any questions you might have about these materials or the issues at hand. We hope you will consider this the beginning of an ongoing conversation, and that you will look to the Iraq Policy Working Group as a resource for further information on the costs and consequences of a potential war against Iraq.

Sincerely,

Iraq Policy Working Group
